Positive Playtime

Playtimes aren't what they used to be!

When I first started teaching pupils used to look forward to playtimes. It was a source of fun filled energy releasing craziness. Where for a short time, you could forget about Mr. Roberts' English lesson and participate in 15 minutes of hopscotch madness, and physical games such as leapfrog, what time is it Mr. Wolf?, or stick in the mud.

Physical activities seemed to be the preferred form of entertainment as opposed to nowadays where we are far more likely to witness pupils talking rather than participating in physical activity of their own doing. I think this can be partly blamed on societies over indulgence in sedentary lifestyles, and the fact that children don't often have to think about how to entertain themselves (there is always a computer, or a Wii handy). As a result children are becoming more lethargic and unhealthy.

We mustn't forget that the playground environment often provides a hunting ground for bullies and as such frequently becomes a place of fear and trepidation instead of the fun-filled, energetic environment that its supposed to be.

To counteract this lethargy and discourage antisocial behavior, we have designed a number of unique simple to follow structured dance activities which can be conducted in the play ground. A Dance In Education services representative will come to your school and teach a number of dance games, quizzes and dance sequences. If the weather is fine, we are even happy to go onto the playground and teach outside. Although we frequently use music the sessions can be conducted without accompaniment and it is often refreshing to hear children use their own voices to accompany the dance activities.
